چکیده

Abstract. This work discusses the first numerical simulation results of fishbone excitation by a suprathermal electron population due to, e.g., electron cyclotron resonance heating and/or lower hybrid wave current drive. The precession resonance underlying the linear instability is clearly identified. Meanwhile, mode saturation is shown to occur because of the secular resonant particle motion, pumping particles out of the radial region where the wave-particle power exchanged is initially localized. The mode nonlinear saturation is accompanied by downward frequency chirping, due to phase-locking of the mode with resonant particles, consistent with the “mode particle pumping” mechanism. Additional frequencies and mode structure patterns emerge in the late nonlinear phase of the fluctuation evolution.

Electron fishbone simulations in tokamak equilibria using XHMGC

This paper discusses the first nonlinear numerical simulation results of fishbone excitation by a magnetically trapped supra-thermal electron population with pressure profile peaked on axis due to, e.g. electron cyclotron resonance heating. Electron fishbone dynamics studies in tokamaks using the XHMGC code

The electron fishbone modes are internal kink instabilities induced by suprathermal electrons. Ion fishbones were first observed experimentally (PDX) [1], opening the path to full theoretical understanding of these phenomena [4]. Stimulated by experimental evidence of electron fishbones (DIII-D, Compass-D, FTU, ToreSupra), theoretical analysis has also been extended to the case of modes excited...

EX/P8-12 Fishbone-like internal kink instability driven by supra-thermal electrons on FTU generated by lower hybrid radiofrequency power

The fishbone-like internal kink instability driven by supra-thermal electrons generated by lower hybrid current drive (LHCD) is of strong interest for the burning plasma research, as the trapped particle averaged bounce characterising the interaction of trapped alpha particles with low frequency magnetohydrodinamic (MHD) modes in burning plasmas depends on energy, not on mass. The charged fusio...

OV / 4 - 2 1 Overview of the FTU Results

New FTU ohmic discharges with Liquid Lithium Limiter at IP = 0.7-0.75 MA, BT =7 T, ne0 ≥ 510m, confirm the spontaneous transition to an enhanced confinement regime, 1.3-1.4 times ITER-97-L, when the density peaking factor is above a threshold value of 1.7-1.8. The improved confinement derives from a reduction of electron thermal conductivity (χe) as density increases, while ion thermal conducti...

The FTU-D Project

A modification of the FTU tokamak (toroidal field BT = 8T, plasma current IP = 1.6MA, minor radius a=0.3m, major radius R=0.93m) is proposed in order to extend the FTU operation to strongly shaped plasmas (FTU-D: R=1m, a=0.18-0.2m, elongation κ=1.6, triangularity δ up to δ=0.8). FTU has a circular vacuum vessel and was built to produce circular plasmas, however unbalancing the currents in the w...
